What's a metronome, and how do I use it?

A metronome plays a steady click. Each click is a beat. BPM means beats per minute — higher BPM = faster.

The loud click marks the start of each bar. In 4/4 you'll hear 1 – 2 – 3 – 4, 1 – 2 – 3 – 4, with the 1 louder.

How to practice: pick a tempo you can play cleanly — usually slower than you think. Strum or pluck on every click. Once it feels easy, bump the BPM up by 5.

Chord practice: pick a progression above and the diagram shows which chord to play each bar. Change chord on the loud beat.
